Scam and fraud are related terms, but they are not exactly the same.

Scam

A scam is a dishonest scheme or trick used to deceive people into giving away money, personal information, property, or other valuables.

Examples:

  • Fake lottery winnings
  • Romance scams
  • Investment scams promising unrealistic returns
  • Phishing emails pretending to be a bank

A scam usually focuses on the method of deception used by the criminal.

Fraud

Fraud is the intentional act of deceiving someone for financial gain or to obtain an unfair advantage. It is generally recognized as a legal offense in most countries.

Examples:

  • Identity theft
  • Insurance fraud
  • Credit card fraud
  • Tax fraud
  • Financial statement fraud

Fraud focuses on the crime itself—the deliberate deception that causes loss or harm.

Key Difference

  • Scam = the deceptive scheme or trick.
  • Fraud = the unlawful act of deception, often involving a scam.

In practice, many scams are forms of fraud. For example, a fake investment opportunity is a scam, and when victims lose money because of the deception, it becomes fraud.

Common Warning Signs Worldwide

  • Promises of guaranteed profits or rewards
  • Requests for urgent payment
  • Pressure to act immediately
  • Requests for passwords, PINs, or confidential information
  • Unexpected messages from unknown people or organizations
  • Deals that seem too good to be true

Scams and fraud occur worldwide through phone calls, text messages, emails, social media, websites, and even face-to-face interactions.
