Corporate finance is the branch of finance that focuses on how a company raises, manages, and uses money to achieve its business goals and maximize the value of the business for its owners or shareholders.

Its main objectives include:

  • Raising capital: Obtaining funds through loans, issuing shares, or other financing methods.
  • Managing investments: Deciding which projects, equipment, or businesses to invest in to generate profits.
  • Managing financial resources: Controlling cash flow, budgets, costs, and working capital to keep the business financially healthy.
  • Making financial decisions: Choosing the best mix of debt and equity financing and deciding whether to pay dividends or reinvest profits.

Example

Suppose a manufacturing company wants to build a new factory. Corporate finance helps answer questions such as:

  • How much money is needed?
  • Should the company borrow from a bank or issue new shares?
  • Will the new factory generate enough profit to justify the investment?
  • How should the company manage its cash while the factory is being built?

In simple terms, corporate finance is about making financial decisions that help a business grow, remain profitable, and increase its value over the long term.
